Who the Service Is Designed For
This NHS service is suitable for:
- Women aged 16–64
- With symptoms suggesting a simple, uncomplicated UTI
- Who are not pregnant
Your pharmacist will check your symptoms and medical history and explain clearly if you are suitable for treatment under this NHS service.
Common Symptoms of a UTI
You may have a UTI if you notice:
- Burning or stinging when passing urine
- Needing to pass urine more often or urgently
- Passing smaller amounts of urine
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Discomfort or pressure low down in the tummy
What to Expect During Your Consultation
We want your visit to feel relaxed, respectful and reassuring. A typical consultation may include:
- A private chat with the pharmacist about your symptoms
- Questions about your medical history and medicines
- Urine dipstick testing if it will help guide treatment
- NHS-recommended treatment if eligible under CAS
- Practical self-care guidance
- Clear safety-netting so you know when to seek further help
When We May Suggest Further Assessment
Sometimes your symptoms may suggest that you need further assessment. For example, we may recommend another NHS service if you have:
- Pain in your side or back (near the kidneys)
- A high temperature or feeling generally very unwell
- Symptoms that keep returning
- Concerns outside the Common Ailments Service criteria
In these situations we’ll guide you to the most appropriate NHS pathway, such as your GP, NHS 111 or urgent care.
