What Is a Progesterone Fertility Blood Test?
Progesterone is a key hormone produced after ovulation. A progesterone blood test (often called a “day 21” or luteal phase test) helps show whether you have ovulated and whether progesterone levels are high enough to support implantation and early pregnancy.
The test is usually done around 7 days before your expected period – for example, on day 21 of a typical 28-day cycle – but we can help you choose the best time based on your cycle length.
Why Have a Fertility Hormone Blood Test?
This test may be helpful if you:
- Are trying for a baby and want to check that you are ovulating.
- Have irregular periods or are unsure when you ovulate.
- Have been trying to conceive for several months without success.
- Want to understand your cycle better before starting fertility treatment.
Progesterone testing is often used alongside other fertility tests (such as AMH, FSH or thyroid) as part of a wider fertility assessment.
In-Clinic 15-Minute Test or Home Kit
- In-clinic fertility blood test (Neath): a quick blood sample taken in our pharmacy clinic at the right point in your cycle. Results are processed via our partner laboratory with clear explanation and follow-up advice.
- Home fertility test kit: take a finger-prick sample at home on the recommended cycle day and post it to a UK-accredited lab for gold-standard analysis.

Who Can Have This Test?
Our fertility hormone blood test is suitable for adults who:
- Are actively trying to conceive.
- Would like reassurance that ovulation is occurring.
- Have been advised to monitor progesterone levels.
- Are considering speaking to a fertility clinic and want initial information.
It does not replace a full fertility work-up, but it can provide useful information to discuss with your GP or fertility specialist.
What Happens at Your Appointment?
- Cycle review: we discuss your menstrual cycle, length and timing to confirm the best day for testing.
- Sample collection: a small venous or finger-prick blood sample is taken in our Neath clinic.
- Laboratory analysis: your sample is sent to a partner UK lab to measure progesterone accurately.
- Results explained: we contact you with your results and can discuss what they mean for your fertility journey.
How Are Results Interpreted?
Progesterone levels are interpreted in the context of your cycle day. Generally:
- Low progesterone at the correct time may suggest that ovulation has not occurred or may be sub-optimal.
- Higher progesterone levels are more consistent with recent ovulation and a functioning luteal phase.
We will explain your result in plain language and advise when to speak with your GP or a fertility specialist for further evaluation.
